Comparing Avon Vs. Marykay in Cost, Quality and Service

Mary Kay products are boasted as being the best you can buy in the private sector.  But what about Avon?  It's been around longer than Mary Kay and has continued to grow in leaps and bounds and is much less expensive.  So are you giving up quality for affordability if you choose Avon over Mary Kay in this depressed economy?  And which is the better choice for those who choose to sell?

First thing you should know is that Mary Kay start up costs between $110.00 and 500.00  Avon start up costs $10.00.

~Mary Kay products are expensive vs. Avon comparable to store products

~Mary Kay urges you to have parties.  You do not have to do parties for Avon

~Orders placed through reps for both companies.

~You can set up an Avon website that people long distances away can order from & Avon will deliver it to them as well.

-Mary Kay orders must be placed through a rep.

-Avon was the first major cosmetics corporation to end animal testing on its products.  Mary Kay also does not use animal testing.

- Avon products are priced equal to store bought products and claim their quality is superior.  Mary Kay products are expensive and also claim superior quality.

-Avon offers a childrens line of soap and toys.  Mary Kay does not.

-Avon offers a pre-teen line and teen line of makeup, clothing and jewelry.  Mary Kay does not.

Mary Kay seems to be targeting older women while Avon is branching out to attract women of all ages with quality affordable make-up, jewelry, shoes, purses and children's items.  Avon's start up is much less than Mary Kay if you choose to sell.  Avon does not require you to purchase 'stock' you can purchase samples of their products at very low prices.  You are not required to place orders every session, but they do require you to purchase items at least a few times a year.  Mary Kay offers a 90% refund on returned products.  Avon offers full refunds for unused products.

I love MK products I used to be one of the consultants for a short time. I am thinking about trying it again however I am torn between MK and Avon. Again I love MK products however Avon has more selections and with this economy I think people make be more likely to order on a larger scale with Avon

does anybody know JAFRA?

I used to sell Avon but now sell Mary Kay. MK is superior hands down. Better quality products and good service. You get much better support from your upline - your MK director is there every step of the way. Avon tells you to just sell the product. MK teaches skincare - huge difference. Also, Avon had horrible issues with backorders. Many of the products in the brochure were no longer available which pissed off my customers. With MK you can purchase inventory but are not required to.

This was a great read

There is still misinformation that is being spread regarding Avon. First, it is not true that Avon reps make 10%, the minimun that you make is 20% and goes up to 50%. Avon has been around longer (1886) and has more reps (5 million compared to 700,000 with Mary Kay). Avon does a lot of charity work. They are the largest corporate contibutor for breast cancer research and they also speack out against domestic violence. With Avon, you are truly in control of your business, there are no mandatory training (but there are endless training modules and meeting that you may attend) there are no quotas, no inventory required, your upline stays with you the whole way and there is always the district sales manage to help guide you along your way. Avon has specialized helplines (customer service, fundraiser, leadership, technical support ie) so you dont have to run in circles on the phone and waste your precious time. So if your low on money, can't or dont want to keep inventory and have earning equal to your ambition Avon is for you.

After reading Kimbra Townsend's article comparing Mary Kay & Avon I found several misleading statements.

1. Mary Kay's start up kit cost is $75 -$100

2. With a qualified order of $200 less supplies & shipping you receive a $50 product bonus; for each $100 increment after that the bonuses can go as high as $150.

3. Place your first qualified order of $200 within 15 days of signing up & receive a free customized color collection plus BizBuilder Bucks credit for future orders.

4. Mary Kay consultants educate their clients on when & how to use their products. They are able to do this because of the extensive training they receive from their directors. Avon reps do not. The main reason for this is that Avon offers almost no training to their consultants or reps, thus they have very little knowledge of the products they sell.

5.Mary Kay gives their consultants their own personal website for only $25 for the first year & $40 per year there after. Clients are able to order any products they need on that website, sent directly to them for no shipping & handling costs to them.

6.Mary Kay focuses on teens as well as any other age group for women and men alike.

7. Mary Kay has chosen to focus on quality skin care & make up rather than spreading themselves thin with numerous other products such as clothing & jewelry.

8. Mary Kay consultants have samples available to their clients of any of their products.

9. Although Avon offers 100% refund on returns Mary Kay's 90% refund is shipping & handling free, Avon's is not.

You can set up an Avon website that people long distances away can order from & Avon will deliver it to them as well.

-Mary Kay orders must be placed through a rep.

This is incorrect. You may also set up a web page for Mary Kay, have an order shipped to you. It is still through a rep, but can still be mailed directly to you - no face to face needed if you choose.

Avon is just near my place.  I think I will also start considering this business. I haven't tried any mary kay products.
