Beauty 101: How to Choose the Foundation for You

Foundation is a basic cosmetic product that all women should have. HereÂ’s how to choose the right foundation for you.

Foundation is a basic cosmetic product that all women should have. Its ultimate goal is to create an even, smooth, uniform and flawless complexion. Different types have been formulated to address a variety of skin colors, skin types and skin needs. Here’s a list of the common types of foundations available in the market:

How to choose your Foundation Type 1: Liquid

The most popular and user-friendly is the liquid-based one. It comes in oil and water-based formula. It is convenient to apply because it glides easily onto your face and is manageable with the use of fingertips alone. Oily skin that is prone to acne should go for the water-based. Dry skin, on the other hand, can benefit from the oil-based foundation.

How to choose your Foundation Type 2: Cream

This is thicker and more opaque and offers a truly flawless look. It’s especially good for mature and problem prone skin. Because of its density, it can also double as a concealer. Due to its density and texture, it might feel “heavy” on the face, and applying generously might give you a cake-like appearance. The trick is to apply it evenly and moderately. If you have relatively normal skin, go for the next type instead.

How to choose your Foundation Type 3: Tinted Moisturizer

This is the sheerest form of foundation. It actually works more in hydrating than in evening skin tone. It’s ideal for normal skin. It’s perfect for active lifestyles and women who don’t need a lot of coverage.

How to choose your Foundation Type 4: Wet/Dry

This is also called dual-finish powder. It is a combination of foundation and/or powder. It can be applied either dry (like powder, with the help of a brush) or with a damp sponge. It’s a great alternative to water-based liquids for oily skin.

How to choose your Foundation Type 5: Mineral

They say that mineral foundation is the healthiest and most natural type of foundation, essentially because it contains minerals. It provides coverage that is gentle to the skin and allows it to breathe. The Micro-mineral kind is even better because it has a closer affinity to skin. Coverage can be heavy and long-lasting, so it's great for women with acne, rosacea and scarring.

Regardless of the type of foundation you will choose, make sure that what you choose is non-comedegenic (non pore-clogging) – thereby preventing pimples from popping, and contains a built-in SPF (sun protection factor) – SPF 15 is relatively good. And always wash your face at the end of the day.
