Makeup Expiration Dates

Every woman has a drawer filled with makeup that she hasn't used in years. Remember that glitter eye shadow you purchased for New Years Eve five years ago? Well, it's time to throw it away because it is long past its expiration date. That's right. There is such a thing as a makeup expiration date. Below you'll find a list of common makeup expiration dates which will help you determine if you should toss it or keep it.

It should be said that using expired makeup won't kill you or make you sick. In fact, most women ignore the recommended makeup expiration date and keep it longer than they should. We're all guilty of hanging on to that $ 10.00 tube of lipstick for decades. And though expired makeup won't hurt you, it does go bad. They dry out and don't offer the coverage that they once did, and can possibly cause your skin to dry out as well.

So, when does makeup expire? Here is a general timetable for your makeup shelf life. We've listed common makeup expiration dates alphabetically for your convenience. Keep in mind that all makeup expiration dates begin once the product has been opened, not when it was purchased.

  • Blush (cream) Up to one year

  • Blush (powder) Up to two years

  • Bronzer Up to two years

  • Concealer Up to one year

  • Eye cream Up to one year

  • Eye liner (liquid) Up to six months

  • Eye liner (pencil) Up to one year

  • Eye shadow (cream) Up to one year

  • Eye shadow (powdered) Up to one year

  • Foundation Up to 18 months

  • Lip liner Up to one year

  • Lip gloss Up to two years

  • Lipstick Up to two years

  • Mascara Up to six months

  • Nail polish Up to twelve months

  • Powder Up to two years

  • SPF lotion Up to one year

Expired makeup can harbor excess oil and bacteria, which can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts. To help prevent this, and to extend the life of your makeup, replace or wash your makeup application tools. Julyne Derrick, of About.com, recommends washing makeup brushes every two to three months in a mild detergent. Cosmetic sponges should be washed weekly in a similar fashion. Replace inexpensive applicators frequently.

What are the signs of an expired product?

Expired makeup is aged cosmetic wear which after time the chemicals within the products begin separating and changing, thus changing the actual effectiveness along with possible harmful effects when applied.

Just like perfumes, when makeup goes off it can start developing a strange smell; the creamy or lumpiness of the product in general can also change. For example expired cover-up can cause serious skin irritation and acne when the product was designed not too. While products such as lipstick can lose their effectiveness on lips instead of being creamy and slick can become clumpy and flaky making your lips feel dry, chapped, and hard to manage properly.

The standards for how long makeup products typically last are as the following;

  • Foundation, Cover-up, and Concealer – Typically will expire after about 3 months of use or non-use. This is due to bacteria buildup within the product, which will cause severe cases of acne.
  • Blush – These products can live up to 12 months without expiring. Blush can be lived longer if it is the dry powder kind by keeping extra care in cleaning your brush between each application to prevent exposing to bacteria.
  • Mascara – this product normally only lives 3 to 4 months. This is due to the facts that the bacteria accumulated in mascara over a period of time can lead to serious eye infections and blindness if not treated long term.
  • Eye Shadow Creams and Powders – Eye shadow should only be used a maximum of 6 months after purchase just like mascara, eye shadow has serious side effects from the buildup of bacteria traveling into the wearers eyes, creating severe side effects within the eye.

Hummm . . .

Never gave it much thought. But, I guess I will be clearing out my medicine cabinet. It is a shame because make up is expensive. I rarely wear it. I guess the next time I need mascara, I will go for the cheapest.

did you like my article

Oh, yes. I did like the article. I happen to be one of those who hangs onto make-up, reusing it if it is not dried up. What I am going to throw out is over 3 years old.

Great information. This just reminds me that I need to clear up some of my makeup products. Some of them are very old, but I have kept them with me, just because I like the color. Thanks! Promoting

thanks for promoting

Very accurate expiration data. Another important tip...if your mascara starts to dry out after a month or two, do not add water to it to thin it out, as this will cause the growth of bacteria to hasten. Important article for all who use these products!
